5 Keys to
Structure for Growth
Key 2: Design around a position, not a person.
Key Principles
Customizing a role to a specific individual’s interests or passions comes with a high degree of risk when that individual transitions.
Hire for the place, not the position. Look for leaders who are loyal, committed to the vision of the house, and are not overly-attached to one particular position in the organization.
When designing roles in a scalable structure, group responsibilities and areas that integrate with one another under each role (e.g. worship and production together under an Executive Director of Programming).
Questions to Ask
Are we raising up leaders to execute tasks, or are we raising up leaders who can develop other leaders?
Are our current leadership roles designed to scale even as individuals move in and out, or are they tailored to specific people?
